With the 3rd Wave 8M, Groove Synthesis presents a synthesizer with a hybrid sound architecture that knows how to impress both visually and functionally. The main focus of the 3rd Wave 8M is on wavetable synthesis, which has been implemented comprehensively and convincingly in every respect. The three oscillators are also capable of reproducing classic analog waveforms and the original 8-bit waveforms of the PPG Wave 2. A special feature is the WaveSurfer with which the wave offset of all three oscillators can be shifted simultaneously. It is one of many details that show how much heart and soul has gone into this instrument. The even more compact 8M version has been slimmed down again in terms of Hardware , but the larger 7" Display offers an even better overview. Most of the functions are just a keystroke away and all settings can be made via the Display or the controls of the function group. The synthesis features, on the other hand, have not been spared, and the 8M is in no way inferior to the large keyboard version!
Sound architecture
Each of the 8 voices of the 3rd Wave Desktop has three oscillators that offer access to either 64 modern wavetables, 32 original 8-bit wavetables from the PPG 2 series or seven high-resolution modeled analog waveforms including white and pink noise. If this impressive selection is not enough, you can use the integrated WaveMaker tool to create your own Wavetables . The overtone-rich drone sound from your modular system has inspired you? Turn it into a wavetable! 32 memory locations are available for this, and you can swap and exchange them with your computer at any time. Hardsync can be switched between the tone generators, and the sound palette is also expanded by linear FM. The carefully constructed and (if desired) modulated sound spectrum flows into two analog filters connected in series. The first is a 24dB Lowpass filter based on a classic SSI 2140 circuit from Dave Rossum. The second is a state variable filter that comes surprisingly close to the SEM filter in terms of sound and, above all, function. The end of the signal path is marked by an equally analog stereo VCA with panning option. The sounds are given the finishing touches by two effect blocks, which generate various delays, phasers, chorus, Distortion and reverb effects and can even be synchronized to Clock .
In seventh modulation heaven
No less than four synchronizable LFOs with nine waveforms each, four ADSR envelopes and three wave envelopes give the sounds in the 3rd Wave 8M the necessary movement. Thanks to the extensive modulation matrix, which comprises 16 entries, 27 sources can be combined with 114 destinations as desired. In this way, the 3rd Wave 8M achieves a flexibility in modulation that you would otherwise only find in a modular system, despite the fixed signal path. Two ADSR envelopes are permanently assigned to the filters and the VCA, two more are freely addressable. Each oscillator has its own 12-stage envelope for modulating the Wavetables , each consisting of six time and level elements. The control times of the envelopes range from crisp and percussive to floating and ambient.
Two 3rd Wave in one!
As the 3rd Wave 8M is dual multi-timbral, you can play two sounds polyphonically on different MIDI channels at the same time, depending on the available voices. There is a separate stereo output for each multipart. For combinations with four sounds, there are several multi-programs in addition to the 500 memory locations for single sounds. Each sound also has a programmable arpeggiator, a polyphonic step sequencer and a voice mode that lets you choose between poly, mono, legato, unison and chord.
