Adjustable air resistance ring

The (air) resistance can be adjusted continuously and individually. Beginners can therefore adjust the resistance to their own personal playing abilities - very similar to their own instrument.

The BERP is fixed directly to the instrument, making it quick and easy to switch between playing directly on the instrument and buzzing with the BERP. This means that difficult passages can be performed much more effectively by alternating between playing and buzzing.

The idea of developing the BERP came from the well-known concept of "buzzing", a mouthpiece that has been used by many teachers since time immemorial. One of the biggest proponents of this method was James Stamp, with whom I studied, and his teaching methods and exercises strongly influenced the development of the BERP concept. He often told us to create resistance on the mouthpiece and to simulate pressing the valves. This gave me the idea of combining these two things and making buzzing more efficient and easier.

The first prototypes were created at the end of 1985 and my students and I were thrilled. I then developed the corresponding BERPs for my other colleagues who taught horn, trombone and tuba, and they also liked the great advantages of this little device. I realized that all brass players could benefit from this development, and so BERP production was launched in February 1986.
