Rides In The Storm SED-CSM at a glance

With the SED-CSM, Rides In The Storm presents a full-featured synthesizer in Eurorack format, combining the best elements of their previous module line into one cohesive unit. This monophonic synth voice goes far beyond the typical bass and lead sounds produced by traditional one- or two-oscillator setups. Its FM capabilities, built-in wavefolder, characterful filter, and exceptionally snappy envelopes place it on par with many modern desktop synthesizers in terms of flexibility and sound design potential. Thoughtfully designed and highly versatile, the SED-CSM offers enormous creative possibilities for both classic and experimental modular workflows.

Oscillators, filters & modulations

It all starts with the two discrete oscillators, which cover a wide frequency range and offer exceptionally stable tracking. Both oscillators provide square waves with pulse width modulation, as well as sawtooth and triangle waveforms. The triangle waveform of VCO 2 includes a wavefolder that can be adjusted manually or modulated via Envelope 1 or LFO 2. Additionally, a sub-oscillator, following the frequency of VCO 1, offers five different combinations of frequency divisions and waveforms. For each oscillator, Envelope 2 or LFO 2 can be selected to modulate frequency and pulse width (Freq 1 and 2, PWM 1 and 2) without requiring patch cables. Hard sync can also be activated for VCO 2.

All signals are routed into the mixer section, which includes VCO 1, VCO 2, the sub-oscillator, an XOR ring modulator, a noise generator, and either an external input or LFO 2. The mixer feeds into a rich-sounding 24 dB low-pass filter with switchable overdrive. The filter can be modulated using key tracking, Envelope 1, LFO 2, or any external control voltage. The VCA is controlled by Envelope 2, or optionally by another CV source.

For modulation, the SED-CSM includes two identical ADSR envelopes, internally routed to various destinations such as the filter and VCA. Each envelope offers a switchable time range (slow or fast) and a loop mode for cycling envelopes. The two LFOs extend into the audio range and can track pitch using key tracking. LFO 1 outputs a triangle waveform, which is sufficient for most standard modulation tasks. LFO 2, which can also function as a third oscillator, features a morphable waveform that fades from ramp to triangle to sawtooth. It also offers a selectable square wave with pulse width modulation or a sample and hold waveform. With its extensive CV inputs, the SED-CSM makes it easy to integrate additional envelopes, function generators, or CV processors into your patch. Cross-patching the module's internal sources is also highly recommended, as it opens up a wide range of creative possibilities.
