Matrix FM

The Mod FM D features a matrix of four operators (sine oscillators), where each operator can be frequency-modulated by the other three. The modulation values and fundamental frequencies are controlled via the 16 endless encoders of the matrix, providing precise manipulation of sound. With 26 algorithms based on the chaotic, inharmonic FM textures. For those looking to explore unconventional soundscapes, the system provides ample room to experiment and push boundaries of FM synthesis.

Complexity right into the audio range

The Mod FM D is equipped with two LFOs that modulate both the frequency and amplitude of each voice, offering an impressive selection of 64 waveforms per LFO. For even greater flexibility, the LFOs can be switched to modulate the VCO and can even be integrated directly into the audio path. This feature enables the Mod FM D to generate classic synthesizer sounds, such as square and sawtooth waveforms, while retaining post-processing through the filterand VCA for added depth and character.

Analog magic

The Mod FM D features an analogue filter per voice, powered by the SSI2140 chip, which is based on the iconic SSM2040. Known for its rich sound an behavior in classic synthesizers like the Oberheim Polys and the SCI Prophet-5 , This chip generates a warm 24dB Lowpass filter and a versatile 12dB Multimode filter. The Multimode filter can smoothly transition berween Lowpass, B andpass and Highpass characteristics and both filters can be mixed independently for added flexibility. For modulation, the filter is driven by a sharp ADSR envelope and a separate LFO, both of which can access 64 waveforms. Additionally, metal noise can be blended into the filter, alongside the FM synthesis and LFOs/VCO.modulation, offering even more sonic variety. The combination of analog filters and the transistor-based VCA for each voice creates a hybrid signal path that imparts analog warmth and bite to otherwise digital sound.

Connections

​​​​​​​The desktop version of the Mod FM D offers comprehensive connectivity, including CV and Gate inputs for each of the eight voices, as well as eight individual audio outputs. The Odd and Even mix outputs route the even and odd voices in groups of four, while the balanced stereo output on the rear panel provides access the synth's effects, adding flexibility to your setup. For modulation, the Mod FM D provides multiple CV inputs, including four shared inputs for behavior of these inputs depends on whether the module is in Single or Multimode. The synthesizer also features complete MIDI implementation, with all parameters controllable via MIDI (using a TRS-A adapter) or USB-C for seamless integration into your setup.
