The SmplTrek from Son icware is the ideal companion for musicians who want to realize their creative ideas in the fastest possible way. The practical device offers various options for how a signal can find its way into the SmplTrek. The impedance of the audio input can be switched so that line, microphone and Hi-Z signals can be processed. The built-in microphone can feed in any sound on the spot, so you can capture the cutlery drawer, slamming car doors or the atmosphere in a station concourse as a sample. You can also sample directly from your smartphone via USB!
Effects are - as they say - the salt in the soup. This sampler has a total of 36 of them on board, which can be used as inserts, sends and Master . Delay, reverb, distortion, modulation effects, bitcrushers and more can be found in the selection. The effects can also be used live on the global tracks and the audio inputs.
Need to adjust the samples further? No problem: resampling, auto-slicing, time-stretching and a pitch function are also implemented. Fans of the famous Amen Break sample will certainly be pleased.
The USB port allows you to connect a smartphone, making it possible to stream audio directly into the sampler. Use the microphone on your smartphone to record a spontaneous vocal performance or sample an exciting part from a YouTube video. Adding effects and crossfades allows a particularly flexible use of the streaming function.
The practical sampler comes from the factory with a professional sample library containing 500 carefully categorized samples of all kinds. Self-recorded samples can be stored on a separately available SD card. Import and export of samples from/to PC or Mac is also provided. An existing sample archive in WAV format can therefore still be used with the SmplTrek.
The SmplTrek sequencer is divided into tracks, scenes and songs. The first step is to define the task that each of the ten tracks should have. You can choose whether the track should be a loop, one-shot, instrument, Drum or MIDI track. The latter is intended for playing/triggering external MIDI instruments such as a synthesizer. The tracks are subordinate to a scene, of which there are 16 in each song; this should be sufficient for creating a live setup or producing an entire song. Three additional global audio tracks are implemented for longer recordings such as vocals and external instruments. Several takes can be recorded on these tracks, which can then be combined to create a perfect final version. Traditional "punch-in" recordings are also supported. Anyone who has ever held a Game Boy in their hands will quickly get to grips with the sequencer and note input. In addition, all operating steps are visualized in the OLED Display and the 16 round buttons also support the input of events. The copy/paste function allows you to add new scenes to previously programmed content in no time at all. Mixer parameters can be recorded and edited in real time. Before the track is exported as a final file, it can be significantly spiced up with the master effects.
