The Deluge from Synthstrom Audible is a compact groovebox that combines a synthesizer, sampler and sequencer. The operation of this multi-talent is largely based on the 128 RGB pads, which are used to enter notes, call up synth parameters and even display samples graphically. The sounds of the synth engine are versatile and programmable, covering everything from ambient to peak-time techno boards. The flexible sequencer can even control external sound generators and can be operated a bit like Ableton live . The Deluge handles samples as comprehensively as the synth engine and even masters time-stretching. If you are looking for a modern all-in-one solution to realize your ideas musically and focus on live performance, you should take a closer look at the Deluge.
The internal sound generation comes with a complete range of functions and offers the synthesis forms subtractive, Wavetable and FM. The sounds can be created from scratch, with the Synth Engine providing the User with multimode filters, envelopes, LFOs, a modulation matrix and other functions at oscillator level. With up to 64 voices, the Synth Engine should still have enough reserves even in arrangements with several synth parts. Most synth parameters are set using the two golden knobs and LED chain. Further parameters can be accessed via the pad matrix. With so much potential, effects are of course a must! Delay, reverb, bitcrusher and various modulation effects add the necessary spice to the sounds. Furthermore, it is possible to record all sound changes as parameter automation in the sequencer. With the arpeggiator, rolling basslines and club-ready melodies can be created literally off the cuff.
The sequencer is the heart of the Deluge. The 128 RGB pads are used to enter notes; Piano Roll and TR-Grid facilitate the input, alternatively an external MIDI keyboard can also be used. There is also an arranger view, which is comparable to Ableton live . You can arrange row by row and play them like a complete scene or play the patterns from the overview as you wish. A Euclidean mode is also provided: you simply define the length of the pattern, the frequency of the triggers and the probability of how often they should be played and the machine generates the pattern automatically. The note programming primarily relates to the internal sound generation, external instruments such as a desktop synthesizer or a Eurorack modular system can also be controlled via MIDI and control voltage outputs. As Program Change, Bank Select and Control Change are also sent, the sequencer can be used to automate all MIDI instruments without any problems. Additional functions such as programmable probability, randomizer, unusual time signatures, polymetry and shuffle round off the flexible options.
The sample section can stream audio files of almost unlimited size directly from the SD card. Thanks to the 90 voices, even a full arrangement should not run out of steam so quickly. Multi-sampling with automatic pitch recognition and complete folder import is also supported. The samples can be displayed as waveforms on the main pads, which looks pretty wicked; scrolling, zooming and setting loop points are available here. The classic sample features such as time stretching, pitch shifting, slicer and resampling have also been included. The sample engine uses the same filters, modulation options and effects as the synth engine to shape the sound of the samples.
The rear panel basically offers everything you would expect from a modern Groovebox . As most setups are kept simple, the stereo output with a large jack is sufficient. MIDI inputs and outputs with DIN connection enable communication with other MIDI equipment. In addition to the data import, the Deluge receives new sample feed via the line and microphone inputs as well as the built-in microphone. Four gate outputs and two CV outputs are available for controlling a Eurorack modular system or synthesizer with CV/gate control. It can even be used to trigger drum modules. A clock input enables synchronization with an analogue sequencer and other trigger sources. If you use the headphone output, you can also tinker with new beats while relaxing on the couch.
