Adjustable air resistance ring

The (air) resistance can be adjusted continuously and individually. Beginners can thus adapt the resistance to their very personal playing possibilities - very similar to their own instrument.

The BERP is attached directly to the instrument, making it possible to switch quickly and easily between playing directly on the instrument and buzzing with the BERP. This allows difficult passages to be performed much more effectively by alternately playing and buzzing.

The idea to develop the BERP originated from the well-known concept of the mouthpiece "Buzzings", which has always been used by many teachers. One of the biggest supporters of this method was James Stamp, with whom I studied and his teaching methods and exercises strongly influenced the development of the BERP concept. He often told us to create a resistance at the mouthpiece and to simulate the pressure of the valves. That's when I thought about combining these two things to make buzzing more efficient and easier.

At the end of 1985 the first prototypes were created and my students and I were enthusiastic. I then developed the corresponding BERPs for my other colleagues who taught horn, trombone and tuba, and they also found great pleasure in the great advantages of this small device. I found out that all brass musicians could benefit from this development, and so the BERP production was started in February 1986.
