Sonically versatile analog filter in a double pack

The CPM DF-8 from Stylophone is a dual analog multimode filter that can be used in stereo or dual mono. The filter box is an ingenious tool for processing drum machines, can give "finished" synth sounds and static samples a new, dynamic character, processes stereo signals and can be used as a backend for the CPM DS-2 to create a complete synthesizer from both devices.

      The filter Eldorado

Basically, the compact desktop device consists of four sections comprising Envelopes, Filters 1 and 2 and Main. The two filters share an identical structure. Filter Type lets you choose from eight different filter characteristics. The GEN R-8 types are derived from the in house synthesizer GEN R-8, each featuring a 12dB slope and covering lowpass, bandpass, highpass and notch characteristics. Under 2045 you will find a 24dB lowpass with a sound reminiscent of the Emulator II E Mu 1984, as well as three mixed modes consisting of 12 24dB Bandpass+, Notch+ and Bandstop+. A noise generator can be inserted instead of or in addition to the input signal. In combination with a lowpass filter, this allows the creation of classic 70s wind and space sounds. In addition to the standard controls for cutoff, resonance and modulation depth, there are threshold and trigger behavior controls for the envelope, as well as switches for filter bypass, VCA on off, envelope inversion and modulation source.

      The envelope section

The section on the left is dedicated entirely to the two envelopes. A switch determines for each envelope whether it operates as a classic ADSR or as a looped AR envelope. The curve characteristics can also be switched between linear and exponential. The envelopes are triggered either via the adjustable trigger threshold or via the gate input. The envelope voltages are internally normalized to the filters and are also available as control voltage outputs.

Main Out with mixer, delay effect, S&H & speakers

In the section on the right, you can set the level and select mono or stereo operation for the filter signals at the main out. The delay effect is located on the main output. It is a characterful lo fi delay based on a PT2399 chip. S and H, short for Sample and Hold, is the third modulation source of the CPM DF 8 and generates random stepped control voltages. The Sync In socket is particularly practical, as it allows the S and H to be synchronized with a keyboard gate or an external clock. The numerous patch sockets invite integration of the CPM DF 8 with a semi modular synthesizer, an analogue sequencer or a Eurorack modular system. The filter unit can be removed from its housing and installed in a Eurorack case, where it occupies 42 sub units and is powered via the system bus. Signal output is available via headphones, line output or the internal loudspeaker.
